Best way to get website off the ground?

What are some tips for getting a website off the ground? I personally have a free web hosting site..

Things I have been doing:
- Link Exchange
- Link Directories
- Site SEO

Anything else I could do?

Content - if you don't have content for search engines to use, you're missing out on probably the biggest source of visitors.

Edit: If it's the site in your signature - figure out what kind of person would use the service, and then figure out how to target them. You need to narrow down the client base as much as possible, even if it means age groups, homeowner or not, whatever. Identify the demographics of your customers before trying to advertise.

You're pretty much doing everything right, just scale it up. If your efforts are White hat only, then it will take a while for traffic to rise.

Just keep at it and eventually you will climb the ranks. Make sure you're targetting your site for certain keywords. "Free phpbb hosting" is probably a good one, so make sure the anchor text in all of the links you're building have those keywords in it. Not "just talk about it "

The quickest way to get a sh*tload of free traffic is to get something to hit the Digg front page or similar news sites. It requires something good, funny, clever, etc... but if you can do it the traffic is great.

Mention it on your pages, use it in your titles and headers, and make sure your the backlinks you generate have "free phpbb hosting" in it.

Do a search on google for "free phpbb hosting" (with the quotes) and you can immediately see your competition for that keyword. About half a million, which is a decent amount. So clearly the phrase is competitive. There's only so much SEO will do for you if you dont have content on your website. Write some tech articles or something, but generate content like AgaBoogaBoo said. Your site doesn't have a lot on it, so don't expect huge traffic unless you want to pay for it.
