i have a big cold sore on the upper right and lower left lips. Try using Abbreva but it's not helping out that much. Worst case of cold sore ever, first time having 2 cold sores.

Thanks

most medicines only treat the pain/numb it. but there's a new expensive medicine that actually treats it, but i forget the name and it costs a lot ($20?)

L-lysine is supposed to help though

It's a virus... herpes. You've got it for life. To control the symptoms, you can try some different OTC stuff.

Don't suck your own dick because that thing will look like a colliflower before you know it!

That Abbreva stuff ussually works well for me ... but damned expensive. I just got one yesterday that it doesn't seem to be touching though :(
Massive doses of L-Lysine seem to help also. My Dr. reccomends 3000mg a day all the time, and double it if you feel one coming on!

I use Abreva but it's really only effective if you start applying it when you first start to feel it coming on.

Keep in mind the difference between Cold Sores (herpes) and Canker Sores (a type of ulcer). As kids, we always called them "cold sores", since that's all we ever hear them referred to as. That and "canker sore" just sounds nasty while "cold sore" doesn't....to a kid, anyway. In point of fact, it's exactly the opposite.

First time I complained about a "cold sore" to my wife (not knowing any better), you should have seen the horrified look on her face. LOL. Oops.

Similar symptoms, but one (canker sores) you get from having otherwise having a normal cold or temporary immune system weakness, stress, food allergies - things like that. Cold sores are....well, from kissing whores. LOL. It is a type of herpes. A virus, same family as the famous STD, that once you have, you have for life.

There are prescription medications which can lessen the duration of cold sores. It's a little late now I think, however if you feel one coming on in the future call your doc.

The majority of adults actually have contracted this form of herpes as children (shared a straw or something with the wrong kid), only a few actually have cold sores break out from it though. So the a$$holes with the "Don't kiss wh0res" comments can STFU.

There are a few different creams that will dry it out in under a week, ask your doc for something specific (I really don't remember what you can get over-the-counter). Most of the meds that have been suggested here are only effective if taken preventitively.

Abreva used to be prescription and went OTC. It's supposed to be very good for treatment..

how come i only get it during the winter?

I'm using Abbreva and it's doing a pretty good job of drying it up.

Cold sores can be triggered by anything that dries out or irritates your skin, like a sunburn or an extended period of cold, dry weather.

And I dunno WTF that guy is taking about, cold sores are a form of herpes and are in the same family as the STD form (genital herpes), but they are NOT an STD. As I said in my earlier post, most people get this form of herpes as a child (their gums swell up for a few days and that's it) and then carry it around the rest of their lives with no symptoms whatsoever. Only a small percentage ever break out a cold sore from this.

And in case some wise-a$$ wants to continue with the jokes or dumba$$ comments about herpes, here's the first link off Google for "cold sores":
