Best way to get involved in volunteer work (in los angeles)

In college I did a lot of volunteer work at soup kitchens, childrens hospitals, retirement homes, etc... and have kinda fallen out of doing it since I graduated, mainly because I guess I am not in a group that does it...

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for volunteer work, specifically in the Los Angeles area..,

do some small crimes and then ask for community service, the cops will point you where you can 'volunteer'

Go to a local chuch or YMCA and ask if you can help out?
