In my experience you still need to know how to deal with these types of companies and be somewhat informed of their packages before you sign up for anything.
My mom wanted to switch from Time Warner to FIOS and the first question they ask is how much she was paying now. She didn't know any better and told them, so they basically built a package for her around what she was paying currently to TWC, which was close to $250 a month. She ended up getting frustrated and just stuck with Time Warner.
I called them back recently and got them to drop it down to about $150, because their original package they were offering her was with quantum internet and whole house DVR, neither of which were things she even wanted, but she didn't understand the difference in the internet speeds.
Over the last 6 years I've switched between Dish, TWC and FIOS after each intro contract ends and find they all try to screw you when you sign up. And they all love to rush you into a contract. They will basically schedule someone to be there and install it before you even realize what happened.
I just want TV and internet.
That's all I wanted when I signed up for FIOS, but it was cheaper to get the triple play bundle rather than just have TV and Internet. What sucks is when you do this, they are obligated to install the phone, even though you don't want it. I got in an argument with the installer, and he basically said he couldn't do the install without installing the phone, which requires extra equipment. My closet has a couple of boxes in it (I'm assuming a UPS and some kind of phone line converter). They ended up drilling 3 or 4 holes in the house for all the coax. And after 1.5 years I've never even activated the phone. I was a little annoyed with that.
