Best way to fix OS after new motherboard?

I have a new MB and the install of XP was done with another MB - same chipset, mostly same of everything, but it dies and reboots every hour or so.

In safe mode it is completely stable.

I had first booted up into regular mode (oops) but later on when I booted into safe mode it did install a whole bunch o drivers for the motherboard. It didn't seem to get better after this however.

Should I do a repair installation or is there some other less painful way of fixing this?

Do I go on a rampage in the device manager and delete everything and restart perhaps?

This is a 2.8 P4 on an Asus MB. Windows XP latest SP everything.

Thanks much....

I always do a reformat/reinstall. But, HERE'S an Anandtech article on how to change mobo's w/o reformat etc. Scroll down and see "Misc Notes" at the bottom.

First thing I would do is try a BIOS update on your new motherboard.
Afterwards give your BIOS settings a once over.
Next I would run CClean and the full gamot of spyware reg cleaners, virus scan etc.
Finally I would reinstall the critical drivers such as active x, motherboard drivers, vid card etc.

If the above fails I would then reinstall windows again over your existing installation...not upgrade or repair.

Hope this helps.

I'm a repair tech and I do this all the time.

You CANNOT just swap mobos, boot up and re-install your drivers!

You need to perform a WinXP Repair Install if you want to keep your old installation. This wipes the device manager and re-detects and installs all devices. It will only install the generic Windows drivers so you'll need to install your audio, video and other drivers afterwards. You'll also need to install the latest Windows Updates.
