Best way to file taxes when you get married?

I just got married in September.

She hasn't made all that much coin this year because she's working a low-paying job at the hospital to help her get accepted into medical school.

Do I get any tax breaks this year if we file separate? I don't fully understand how that stuff works because I've been single all my life....until now.

I'm in the same boat as you. I make 5 times what my wife makes and we just got married in Jul.

figure it both ways, filing seperately and jointly and see which way you pay less tax

My wife and I file jointly because it worked out better that way. I can't guaratee the same for you though.

I use tax software every year and just fill in all the information and have it calculate filing jointly and filing separately. Filing jointly has always come out better.
