best way to deter auto theft?

I've always thought that using the "club" or other devices were sort of lame because thieves will steal anything if they really want it. one of my coworkers just got his car jacked though, in fullerton california (orange county!) and so it has me rethinking these "deterrant" devices. what is the best "deterrant" device for preventing auto theft? I park outside and have a pretty nice car that already has an alarm wired in it. One of my close friends uses one of those devices that you stick between the brake and the steering wheel. what do you guys think?

I'd also like to know more about auto-theft protection. I have a fairly nice car and just put over $8,000 worth of top of the line audio-equipment in my car and I'm sure that won't stay secret for long. Any suggestions?

Obviously a locked garage is the best deterrant to auto theft. Any good alarm that has been professionally custom installed (the install is literally more important that the alarm itself) is a must. Get the starter-kill and battery backup installed with it. Never let your alarm installer know you live or where your car is parked. As a last resort, a hidden switch to shut off the fuel pump works well as long as never tell anyone that knows where your car is parked where the switch is located (or even that it exists).

All those gimmics like the club, etc. are worthless.

IMO it's important to remember that nothing can ever stop your car from being prowled or stolen. It could always be towed, and some asshole could always break a window to get inside. Make sure the vehicle, including any aftermarket equipment, is properly insured. Like I posted at the beginning, a garage is best.

get a remote battery thingy. you can cut off power completely with a click of the button... car wont go anywhere if it wont start up!

this is actually the method i employ

1990 mazda with 186K miles
1997 saturn with 118k miles

nobody will steal those

i also try to park next to brand new fancy car/trucks whenever possible

I use the club plus the one that locks my brakes. That on top of a car alarm works for me. I've had my car stolen several times and have been safe since. I also lock my trunk, so if they break into my cabin, they still can't get into the trunk where some valuables are.

I've had my car window broken once and I was outside before the thief could do much of anything. He took off running and I didn't want to endanger my life...

how useful is an electric kill switch ? The kind that doesn't allow even the key to turnover the engine. The thieves would need to locate the switch first (or not realize something is wrong)... but can it be bypassed in another way ?

you can buy an aftermarket device that plugs loads new maps to the ECU of the Legacy GT 2005. They have a theft mode, which the ECU kills the engine if it goes over 1200RPM. Pretty neat stuff

my friend had a 1986 corolla stolen around the UCLA campus once. one of my other friends had a 1987 mazda something purple colored with shiny wheels and lowered (he didn't do ... the guy two owners before actually did it) ... total piece of junk that had dents all over it ... that got stolen around the uc berkeley campus.

thieves steal anything ... but im especially worried since my car is only a few years old and its nice. are any of you thieves?! perhaps you could tell me. hahahaha. 🙂

I haven't had any break-ins on my '89 Buick yet. 😉

But none of the really classy chicks dig it. 🙁

leave a rabid pitbull with a fan and a bowl of water inside. also train him to not accept food from any but yourself. then make a sticker and put it on your window that says: 'protected by the lockjaw'.
