Best way to deal with upgrading MB

I'd like to ask for advice: I have an old Athlon system and got one of those cheap FX-55 chips (cheap other than the whole rest of the system you get to build around it).

I don't like the hassle that the 100+ programs I have installed on Windows XP all get lost and have to start over to re-install the OS with a new motherboard.

Can someone help with how to make this easier? For what it's worth, I'm adding at least one hard drive to the system which could become the main boot drive.

I haven't yet picked the MB for the FX-55, but hear any new MB normally requires a reinstall, outside of a PC Gamer article I have on a technique to get around it, that's one option.

Thanks.

Before installing the new hardware go to add or remove programs and uninstall any old drivers that are listed. If you have Windows XP all you need to do is a repair install. However if your XP disc doesn't have SP2 you should slipstream it. Now you can install the new motherboard chipset drivers, video, sound, and anything else with a bang in the device manager.

Thanks for the tip. Is there a bit more detailed step by step info available?

I think my Win XP CD does not have SP2; how would the slipstream process work, when you say 'old drivers' do you mean 'current drivers', etc.
