I wouldn't expect a great 480p picture from them or anything.

you are correct, but that's not the problem i'm having. the problem is simply converting the dvd to a format that the pmp/pmc can then convert to it's native format.

VCD ? There must be a ton of tutorials/tools for that.

If the device will play divx/mp3 encoded movies, then you need to get Fair Use. It's the easiest dvd-2-avi app out there, and the results are great.

Edit: Yep, this thing does support divx and xvid encoded avi's with mp3 audio. You should be able to rip the dvd with Fair Use, and just place the .avi file onto the player's hard drive. You should NOT have to go through any other format conversions.

thanks, i'll try fair use. fyi, to anyone who owns the gmini 400, i found a decent site about the device run by a user: www.gmini400.com. he suggests using a program called PocketDivXEncoder; it's meant to convert non-locked video to the correct format for a number of different pocket devices, mostly phones and pda's, but the programmer recently added a bunch of archos devices in the beta version. it works great. now i've got the following process:

1) rip the dvd to my hd using dvdsrhink;

2) convert the non-locked dvd on my hd into an avi file using PDXE. PDXE can rip multiple tracks at a time so i can give it all the episodes from a single disk and just let it go. so far i'm really pleased with the results. this works for the creative zen device too, since wmp can convert from the avi format the gmini uses.

thanks for all the help guys, i think i finally found something that works!

I know this is an old one but I'd thought I'd reply anyway and see if anyone else has seen this. I ripped a dvd using DVDshrink. I then used Dr.DivX to encode the files into DivX format. Pretty simple stuff, but DR.DivX seems to eat up all my system resources. I am running a P4 2.66Ghz with 1.5 Gbs of ram. Ihave a Radeon 9800pro graphics card with an ATI TV wonder pro add on. Why is my cpu processes maxed out @ 100% the whole time the encoding is going on. When I encode video into the computer from my digital cable box via s-video cable using the supplied ati software (on an ATI TV wonder Pro capture card) my system resources never peak above 35%. WTF?
