best way to convert money?

I know the best way to convert money used to be just using a credit card/atm, but may credit cards (and both of mine) are now instituting a percentage based fee for overseas transactions... so I don't know if that's the best idea anymore.

Anybody know?

ATMs are kinda rare in some countries (like Japan, surprisingly)
Travel guide books can provide that kind of info

If you're a AAA member they do conversions well - they can also hook you up with an part ATM part Debit Card thing that you can load with an amount of foreign currency.

There's always traveler checks. It depends more on where you're going. Most Countries have money exchange centers, where you can exchange cash at good rates.
