Best way to connect Xbox to internet?

I just acquired a modded Xbox that I got all set up in my room. I only have one long Cat5 cable that is connected to my desktop in the room.

Could I install a PCI NIC and use Internet Connection Sharing with a small cat5 patch cable from that NIC to the Xbox? I don't have wireless and I would like a way to connect the Xbox to the 'net without having to buy another 25-50' long cat5 cable. I'm pretty sure I have a old PCI NIC laying around. I've used ICS long ago and it was kinda crappy but that was Win95 days IIRC.

Or could I accomplish it using a crossover cable somehow? I don't have a spare hub/switch to use for the long cat5 cable from the router. I need internet for the Xbox so I can transfer files, stream media, and to use with Xlink Kai.

Well, I was going to suggest the switch. They are inexpensive and would probably be your best bet. Wireless would work too, but for most of my friends that use it, it has been hit or miss.

Ah... guess I haven't checked online prices. B&M prices for cat5 cables are outrageous, so I wasn't considering getting another long one (might need a 50' actually), but suppose that would be the cheapest and easiest way to do it. Also at the time I didn't know if my new roommate would run wireless or cable, if the latter then there would be no open ports on the router, but he is using wireless so there should be an open one for me now.
