I'm getting a laptop, and I have an 80GB 3.5" hdd from my desktop that I want to connect to the laptop for video editing. I have looked at USB 2.0 and firewire enclosures that put the hdd into a case and converts it to USB 2.0 or firewire, effectively making your own external harddrive. But the performance is horrible. USB 2.0 and firewire transfer rates (from reviews) of these enclosures are 12MB/s to 15 MB/s. Not enough for video editing. My question is that since USB 2.0's bandwidth limit is 60MB/s, why is the IDE hdd only getting 12 MB/s in the USB 2.0 enclosure?
If I don't do it that way, then could I simply connect the laptop's IDE cable and hang it out of the laptop and connect it to my 80GB hdd?
Are there any other ways to connect a 3.5" hdd and get fast transfer rates for video editing?
