Best way to clone ssd?

My laptop has a 256 gb Nvme ssd. I would like to install a higher capacity drive. What is the best way to clone the drive? I need a USB adapter of some sort and connect both drives to another computer?

You are correct in that an adapter is called for, one that adapts an NVMe drive to a usb connection allowing the OS to read/write to the external drive. I cannot recommend one in particular but there appear to be several on Amazon suited to this .Here is an example unit. Some are labeled for specific brands of NVMe drives.

Macrium Free edition will clone the drive.

Regarding the usefulness of a second computer, that would provide a better platform if the second system offered 2xM.2 ports and a boot SSD so the clone could be done internally and verified through a reboot. Absent that arrangement, the USB external drive should work fine. Just remember to expand the target partition space to the full size of the drive. .
