I've done the same thing...with a mid-2009 MBP, it's quite easy. Used carbon copy cloner...to make a replica of the OEM HDD drive and copied it to an external drive. Then removed the OEM drive, replaced it with the SSD, and restarted while holding the option key down and selected the external drive to boot from. Then just copied over the system files to the new SSD drive...
If you have an external enclosure, install the SSD in it and simply clone the OEM drive to the enclosed SSD. Then swap the SSD for the OEM drive and reboot.
