Best way to buy a PS3?

alkemyst

No Lifer
New to consoles (my last three were Pong, Atari 2600, and then an Intellivision II), been a light PC gamer for years and heavy back in my late teens/20's.

Looking mostly for Call of Duty with friends at a new job I will be starting. It's even a joke question on the interview "What's your favorite gaming console?".

There are lots of packages and places to buy now. I have memberships at Sam's, Costco, and BJ's if that matters.

I am open to eBay and online vendors as well.

Thanks

Å

Looks like that game is going for $40-50 new or used, not a bad deal at $250ish net and I can even enjoy the game first.

I will be buying in a month or so...my new job has me buying all new clothes, $300 in books and heading out tonight to pick up a smartphone/iphone combo for my wife and I.

I would avoid used these days. What with the recent PS3 hacks Sony has been at least threatenting to ban consoles (or maybe just accounts) from PSN access. I'm not sure of the specifics, but just to be safe I wouldn't get one used that could potentially be locked out by Sony.

Definitely not looking to buy a used console. I am open to eBay vendors though.

Did you make sure they have PS3s there? If most have 360s you'll want that instead since you can't play online with them unless you have the same console.

Sony used to offer a deal that if you got one of their credit cards and bought a PS3 they would give you $150 statement credit (could be bought anywhere, not just from Sony). May be worth seeing if they run any deals like that anymore.

The 20/60 GB models with hardware PS2 BC are now at least 3 years old, so I'd suggest getting a new PS3 Slim with warranty instead.

Though I'll admit the 60 GB is nice for playing PS2 games -- the image quality is as good as or slightly better than a real PS2 Slim with component cable, and you can create unlimited memory cards on the PS3 hard drive. . . . until your PS3 dies and you have to pay Sony $179 to get it replaced. (They charge $30 extra to replace your dead 60 GBs with another 60 GB instead of with a newer model.)

I would suggest using some form of modern currency.

perhaps the US dollar, or Euros?

(though would be much more expensive if paying Euros)

stay in OT troll.

Anyone know if the Sony Card incentive still exists? My brother got his that way actually.

lighten up, oh fearless drunken one.

I haven't heard of the Sony card thing in some time. IIRC, the last time it was offered, Toshiba was still making HD DVD players.

You could always check Sony's website...

What do you mean by best way?

since your first post said 'new'...I guess you don't understand much esp when others have already replied with valid answers.

Think about packages, discounts and the like that are out there. Obviously if you have no clue it's best just to skip this thread.

kthx!

New to consoles or not, maybe title your thread better. Best way to buy a ps3 infers how to buy a ps3. Not what is the best deal.

Sort of like what's the best way to buy a car. People will tell you to look online and haggle.

Anyhow if you don't want to sign up for any credit cards then killzone 3 bundle on amazon is the best right now. its 300 no tax and you can flip the game if you just want the console.

If you don't mind signing up for a credit card. Wait for sony to have their 20000 rewards points on 1st purchase(its currently only 10000). Sign up for that card, buy ps3 from amazon(to save tax), submit forms for 5x bonus credit of buying a sony product, and 1 form to get purchase credit of $215 dollars. Net cost of ps3 is about 85 bucks.

10000 reward points = $100 so if you sign up for card now it'll be $185, less if you dump the game.

you can proceed to mine for more reward points. If you're diligent you can mine about 225 bucks or so a year.

Really the only answer is the obvious answer - watch hot deals sites (ATHD isn't as good as it used to be, I prefer slickdeals) and wait for a good price/bundle. They come up from time to time with either a good game bundle or a giftcard ($50 seems to be the standard).

However, I think the price breaks are often driven by Sony, they seem to all pop up at the same time. When one vendor offers it, three others will at the same time.
