So about a couple of months ago I was looking for a summer job (didn't get one :( ) and I happened to come accross FindTuition.com. Since the whole point was for me to finance my education, I figured what the heck. I signed up, filled out my profile (Grad student, good gpa, Electrical Engineering... MALE .... blah blah blah). Anyways, today while worrying about how I will pay for my education, I remembered that site again, recovered my password and signed in.

According to their site, I was eligible for ~$1.2 Million in tuition aid from all levels of government and school (University of Michigan). I was like sweet, lets begin. BUT you have to pay to see the info. Ok, no big deal (I thought), if I get even 1, my worries lessen and I atleast get my money back and then some. So I paid up, accessed everything that I was qualified for and here is what I have.

40% of the awards I qualify for are for Undergrads
30% for Women and minorities that I don't count myself in
10% are student loans
15% are for majors completely unrelated to my chosen field (Art, Business, Journalism)
4% are National Guard signup bonuses

and yes that adds to 99% because with my luck, there are 1% that apply to me but I missed them because of my rage.

God life sucks :(

PS. I have been worried sick about how to pay for grad school, every avenue that I have tried has shut me down (Off campus jobs, On campus jobs, GRA and GTA positions). I hope I don't get ulcers before school starts.

EDIT - Somewhere in that number are awards that don't even apply to my chosen University or even my state.

Crib notes:
- Worried sick about tuition (don't wanna fall in to the student loans mess)
- Pay for a site that claims to be a database of awards to help pay for tuition
- Findtuition.com is a scam

Uhm, never pay for scholarship info. Thought it was common knowledge that those are always big scams.

Ooops, forgot to mention, most awards have the deadline of Feb 15th. No mention of what year.

I could have gotten my entire degree paid for if I was a citizen and promised to teach afterwards at a historically black school (which I would have jumped at the opportunity for anyways). But going to a new school as an incoming Masters student and getting full funding is a big challenge. One of the reasons is that some students bail after finishing their Masters but those type of awards almost always require a PhD committment.

Very true. Most master's programs I've seen are unfunded, which is why they're slightly less-competitive (for the most part; I'm generalizing) than going for your Ph.D.

Try fastweb. I'm not sure if they do grad school scholarships, but it's worth a shot. If I didn't have a stipend and tuition waiver from my doctoral program, I'd definitely be feeling your pain. Even with all that, I'll still need loans to cover living expenses.

it could be like me. i applied to a masters program and got in. now sept looms and Im still applying for student loans and trying to figure out how to pay for it.

at $2800 per class that you pay yourself (and not your parents) its hurting plenty. I can get a nice car or i can get my masters!
