Best way to access home network from work?

I've done some searching on here and haven't found much in the way of what I'm looking for. I have several computers at home, a server, desktop, etc. I have a cable modem attached to a wireless AP/router. I would like a way to access my files and/or desktop from work. I currently use VNC while I'm at home to control my server (it is in a closet). The server runs Win2000 professional and the desktop is XP Pro. What would be the best method for me to accompish this? I've thought of enabling XP's remote desktop (and opening up the firewall for that, although I'm not exactly sure how to accomplish that), but it seems like a big security risk. The same with VNC, that seems like it would leave a hole also. I've also considered a VPN, but don't really want to buy another router (although Linksys just released their personal VPN box). I welcome any suggestions. Thanks!

Vetteguy,

You don't need the VPN router from Linksys to accomplish this. If you can put Windows 2000 Server on your server machine, you should be able to allow VPN connections (using RRAS) to your server through the Linksys router with port forwarding to port 1723. It works very well, and its pretty secure due to PPTP encryption.

Vette,

The setup is somewhat confusing if you have never done it before, but there is plenty of info out there to help you set it up. Microsoft's support center has some good Q articles on setting it up. You can e-mail me if you need to also.

Thanks...I might install 2000 server this weekend. If I do I'll see what I can do with the VPN stuff.
