I am in a chemistry class for school and the course requires me to memorize a lot of information. I have to memorize most of the elements and around 40 polyatomic ions. I'm sure some of you have some hints for memorization of a large amount of information

I find what really helps is to write it down repeatedly. That and spreading it out over time so you only have to do a few a day.

Set them in some rhyme scheme to a catchy Gilbert And Sullivan tune.
Hey, it works for the Animaniacs!

I try to relate them with other stuff that I know. Also, I've found out that is easier for me to memorize things when I am sleepy. Try it...you might remember everything the next day.

I'm currently in chemestry aswell. I have discovered that the best method for me (if you are studying notes) is to remember where information is located on the page. Just take a mental picture of you notes and just remember generaly what was on what page and then when you come to a question flip to that page (in your mind) and start "reading" it.

Yep, that's exactly the way I did it when they made us memorize useless crap. I recommend this method as long as time is not a major factor in the test and you don't actually need to know the information after the test is over.

Yeah, I always made up silly rhymes and songs to remember stuff like this.

Of course, I'm not the best person in the world to be giving advice on this. After I got my PDA, my short-term memory has gone all to hell :(

I would always just list them out, then memorize the first group of 5, then go through them in my head without looking at notes. Then do the next group and go through group1 and group2. Then memorize group3 and go through 1,2, and 3, and so on until I've done all the groups. If I screw up once when going through a particular group, then I'd rememorize the one I messed up and start all over from the beginning. Eventually I'll be able to go through all the groups without messing up and I'm done...

I took chem last year, and I memorized some and others I learned by using them often...became like second nature...
