after seeing this deal over in HD i figured this would be the opportunity for me to pick up the wap/router combo that i've always wanted.

would this be a good choice though? from what i hear the range is sort of small... reviews? personal experiences? suggestions? please share :) thanks!

Best range I've used of the Soho ones is the Speedstream 2624.... dont get a 2623, its a POS -- speedstream has supposedly halted sales of them. Linksys, dlink, Netgears, and such have all been ok, but nothing spectacular... The Speedstream and some linksys have removable antenna's though which makes extending the range as simple as buying a better one and screwing it on.

I'm a fan of SMC routers, WiFi or Ethernet. I've also heard good things about D-Link's WiFi stuff (and I know that their Ethernet stuff rules).

I have used the Speedstream 2624 for about 6 months now. Pretty happy with it. Rebooted it twice in that time span and once I do not believe it was the router having the problems. One of the reasons the range is good on this AP/Router combo is that is has a 5 dBi dipole while the rest of the SOHO devices use 2.2 dBi antennas predominately. I'd like to have seen them use dual antennas so spatial diversity could have been implemented to fight multipath but all in all it's a pretty good AP and Router, not to mention it can be found cheaply these days. Another thing I would like to have seen is MAC addy filtering. It has a version of access lists via IP allowed/disallowed and you can turn off DHCP and run static IP's so it's still has security measures beyond WEP. Some content filtering as well if I remember correctly. Never used it.

Yeah, I haven't flashed the router with the most current firmware yet. Be happy to see MAC addy filtering added. The original firmware and the first flash upgrade did not have it as an option.
