I have tested many drivers for my V5 5500 and the most compatible are the 1.04.01 betas. OpenGL is faster than the 1.04.00 drivers and much many times more stable than any of the 'hack' drivers I've tried (ice or iceman drivers or whatever). Other OpenGL drivers like WickedGL will speed it up more for SOME games. The V3/4/5's lives are limited by the fact that 3DFX is belly-up, so if you don't already have one, forget it (not to mention the fact that you can't really find them anymore...well, maybe the 3's and 4's can be) you ain't gonna get much in the way of new drivers(not ones that work with EVERYTHING anyway).
This may be slightly off topic but...
GeForce...they have about a ZILLION driver sets, and not one driver set that will run EVERY game. Not to mention their over-inflated prices for their truly powerful card. We'll see what happens with GeForce(or should I say NVidia) now that they have 'assimilated' the rights to 3DFX technology in future cards. My suggestion for GeForce/NVidia? Wait and see.
Radeon...Not much experience with these cards, but when I looked around for drivers, I saw 2. Not a zillion, just 2. I know that number is bound to change, probably already has(been a couple of months since I looked), but at least they don't drown you in driver sets. I have seen very few complaints about these cards. This card seems like the one to get for the current point in time, and just HAS to be easier to get running than GeForce/NVidia cards. That is unless I'm mistaken about this cards compatibility.
My suggestion...if you have a Voodoo 4/5, just use that for now. That is unless you play Tribes(apparently). Wait, watch the forums and decide for yourself which card is best.
I've got a strange feeling that video cards in general are going to go through a drastic evolution soon

. So don't be too hasty when it comes to getting a new one. In my book, compatibility takes precedence over brute speed. Framerates only matter when they drop below 40fps. My Voodoo 5500 and 1.33gigglehert CPU absolutely ZOOMS with any game that I have tried(about 100 of 'em) and that's running at a resolution of AT LEAST 1024x768. The video quality is higher than the others too!
This post is not meant to anger anyone, I am just stating the facts as I see them. And to help those people that want COMPATIBILITY with ALL their games and not just some of them.
NVidia: 'Stand down your video cards and prepare to be assimilated.'
3DFX: 'Noooo! You won't take us alive! Seven, re-route power to the Glide drivers, add more VSA's if you have to!'
NVidia: 'Resistance is futile!'
