Doesn't matter if it's paid or free, but what's the best out there??

The best solution is not software, it's hardware. Get an Obi110, Obi100, or Pap2. Plug a real phone into it and you're set.
 
I'm using Counterpath X-Lite V 3.0 build 29712.

The last time I tried their v.4 it was in beta and really sucked, so I never even entertained the idea of paying for it.

Is this the best that there is out there...don't know. Some like Pangolin and Zoiper, but I never tried them (and don't know if they are still current.)
