Best VNC variant, most secure?

For non-XP machines, I have been using TightVNC. It's okay. Not very fast; the refresh doesn't always work properly. But is it secure? I don't think the traffic in encrypted...

Are there any better VNC variants? Looking for encryption and something stable (not security holes). I know there probably isn't one that works as seamlessly as Remote Desktop, but it would be nice if it at least worked as good as Netmeeting. I'm not looking for extra features (like file transfer, chat, pacman, etc.)

I think the usual way to secure vnc is to tunnel it over ssh. Not that that will help latency much...

UltraVNC is the one I use to connect to my home system from work, and it works great. Not sure about the security issues, but that's not a big deal me.

All the VNC clients are basically the same to me, but I do like being able to connect to the system using any computer thru the browser. I've only used UltraVNC, so I'm not sure if the other clients have this feature or not.

You might try sending a PM of a link to this message to JackMDS. I'm not sure if he ever comes out of the Networking forum. 🙂

somewhat on topic....can anyone say what the difference between realvnc and tightvnc is? I just found out about that "opencd" thing, and it includes tightvnc. I've always used realvnc, and its been fine, but I see "tight" is based on "real"....so what are the differences? do they both still run as a service, etc.?
