Best videocard for around $300?

I currently have a GTX 970 along with an Intel i5 4570, and i've been hearing good things about both AMD and Nvidia cards this generation.

Which would you recommend for this kind of budget?

Minimum would be getting a GTX 1070

I just went from R9 290 to GTX1070 myself. TPU showed around 60% improvement across the games they tested

Replaced a GTX 970 for a GTX 1070 in August. As was said, its the bare minimum for an upgrade. Your current isn't a dog (as fast as an RX 470 or GTX 1060 3GB from the current gen), so you need to make sure you're actually getting a decent upgrade. The GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 are about it at the moment.

Being that's not your budget you need to just keep saving for the extra $80 or sit this gen out.

I would recommend waiting a little bit longer just to see how the newer Vega cards from AMD compare. Best case you have a new option close to that price range. Worst case 1070 cards may be a little cheaper by then.

What resolution do you run?

Or you can do what I did, sell your GTX970 to subsidize the GTX1070. I only spent 286usd for my GTX1070, the card was 434usd including VAT at my place. I got lucky since the next cheapest is 472usd.

That's basically what I did with mine. Got my GTX 1070 for $210 after selling the 970.

1080p is my resolution.

Some how your worst case scenario to me seems a plausible good alternative. Worst case for me would be Vega is delayed/bombs NV exploits GTX 1070 price goes up! Haha.

For 1080p and with your mid-range i5, seems to me the 970 is a pretty good match. Not sure it is worth the upgrade unless you plan to upgrade the monitor and/or cpu at some point as well. I suppose it could be worth while if, as others suggested, you sold the 970 and put the money toward the 1070.

Darn, I guess i'll just upgrade my CPU then.
