(I'm still waiting for a game to use proper celtic (Irish etc.) music - AFAIK it hasn't been done yet - but would be perfect for an RPG... ).[/quote]

You should get the Final Fantasy IV: Celtic Moon soundtrack. It's quality!

Megaman Series
King of Fighters Series (KOFXI had really good music)
HOMM Series
Final Fantasy Series

I'm sure theres a lot of good music, this is the only stuff I can think off the top of my head.

Keeping in mind that I never owned a console and have never played the FF series, here's the top of my list:

Descent 1 (Redbook audio version) and to a lesser extend 2
Homeworld (Not as awesome when listened to in winamp, but fits the game so perfectly to set the mood.)
Mechwarrior 2
KKnD2 had a couple nice tracks, say surv1 or robo2
Master of Orion 2 had a great music to it, but it was limited by the hardware of the time. I'm sure someone has done a modern remake of it somewhere..... and if you find it, leave me a pm with a link :)
Halo 1
Starcraft wasn't bad either
Wing Commander 3 and 4 - though I hold WC3 to be the best game of it's time.
Freespace 1/2

Outlaws and Baldur's Gate 2. I remember playing the Outlaws disc in my stereo every day way back when.
