Best Video Editing HDD: WD 6tb Black vs. Seagate 10tb Ironwolf vs other?

I bought the WD 6TB Black last time, and it's full. Been a good performer.

How does the 10TB Ironwolf from Seagate compare? It seems to be same performance? But I know the Black drives are so highly regarded, wondering if I am missing something here?

Or, is there a better version? 6TB-10TB drive size is what I am after. More is better, but I don't want to sacrifice performance as I edit off the drive (4K 10-bit footage, etc.).

I'll consider any line if it's good! Just looking for something that matches WD Black performance all around (or quite close), and ideally has higher capacity (WD Black is still topped out at 6TBs, and I eat through space pretty quick).

Which drive would you recommend in the HGST Ultrastar line and why?

HGST is pretty much considered hands down the most reliable.
He8 is more cost effective, but He12 if you don't particularly give a hoot about price/capacity

I would buy the HGST ultrastar He8 or He10 if I was in your shoes op. But I wouldn't be surprised if the wd black 6tb is ultimately a slightly faster hard drive... Those ultrastar's are low power large capacity drives while the wd black is mainly built for speed, they also run way hotter.

I have a couple He8's in my E5 v4 WS and they've been great and plenty fast enough for what I do, mainly premiere/photoshop work.

If you really need speed stripe a couple He10's raid0.

I'm sure seagate ironwolf is probably fine, I know it's fast from the reviews i've read, just prefer other brands. Mainly hgst & wd.

Yes definitely. They are still very fast and they run cool.

Either Amazon or Newegg. Just make sure you buy direct and not from a 3rd party seller.
Ultrastar He12 isn't readily available yet at the normal retailers so you will have to wait a bit if you want the 12TB drive. He8 & He10 is available now.

About the different variations of drives if you download the hgst datasheet for the drive you want you can decipher the different model numbers. There's not much difference but I usually go with 512e ISE drives.

I wouldn't buy that one unless what you want is a SAS drive.

And yeah I guess you're stuck ordering from overstock, fulfilled by Amazon.
It's strange because sometimes Amazon will sell them direct and then all of a sudden they will stop for some reason.

"Buyer beware! All 12 drive serial numbers show as "invalid" on the HGST website! I called HGST and they said they are invalid drives and I need to return them."

And on Newegg there's about a dozen options for "HGST he10 SATA"

hmmm, I don't know about that. It seems they might be OEM drives and hgst refuses to warranty directly. You would have to go through overstock to get warranty. That's pretty much bullcrap if true. I might think twice about buying them.
I would email Overstock/Amazon and see what they say.

Frankly, until Seagate changes their warranty policy, it just isn't worth dealing with them.
The He line is pretty much the best out there, but, as with any mechanical device, always have a backup.

Having said that, how big are the files we are talking about, if they aren't too massive, I know a few people that use SSDs/ NvMEs for editing, and then the spinners for storage.
