What's the best card for a programmer and web surfer who never plays games other than Riven although my nephews may visit and play a game.?? Can this be had for under $100? Gonna have a Duron 800 or maybe TBird 850 on a KT133A mobo. I've got a 19" Princeton Ultra 92 monitor, if that matters.

Best under $100?

Best under $150?

If you don't mind driver nightmares, a Radeon 32DDR might be a good option. A G400 would be the best if you can find one.

You can be packing a Radeon DDR for under $150. The Radeon SDR is a little cheap but slower.

StickHead & Isd,

Thanks for your posts. I'm currently using a Matrox Millenium and have for years and I like it's compatibility especially when I boot into Linux.

Why would you get the G400 over the G450 and where would you go to get the best price? Also, is OEM just as good with this particular product as it retail counterpart?

I'd do a search at www.ibuyer.net, they have the best prices.

OEM is exactly the same thing as the retail version, except without all the bells and whistles. All you get is the hardware, the drivers and the cables (if any are needed). So i'd always stick with oem, besides, there much cheaper.

OK, I've decided on the Matrox, but now after doing a search on pricewatch I find all kinds of cards.
SDR, DDR, 16M, 32M, single head, dual head.

I think I'd be fine with 16M, single head... I don't know about SDR vs DDR. Is DDR much faster than SDR?

I suppose it doesn't matter whether its a g400 or g450. If it matters, my current settings are at 1152 x 864 with 16 bit color and refresh rates of 77.6 KHz / 85 Hz.

2d quality of the Voodoo 3 is excellent. It's also 'adequate' for most of todays games. If you've no interest in games, and can find a cheap voodoo 3 (cheaper than you can find a G400) - go for it.

2d quality of geforce/tnt ultra cards is inferior to vooodoo/matrox/ATi cards, so I wouldn't really recommend a nvidia model.

I think DDR in the g450 is 64bit which makes it slower than the g400 in games (someone correct me if i'm wrong). However since you're not a gamer it would't make a differnce. The g400 and g450 are similar in price on pricewatch.

I would say a geforce2MX but if you decide to go the 3dfx way, just go with the V4. I don't recommend getting 3dfx products anymore, I love them, I'm happy with my V5 but it's just too late now. Pricewise, the V4 and MX are about the same price, give or take $10.

3Dfx is dying. If you get a Geforce2MX, get the ELSA or VisionTek (same card), and you will not be disappointed. My ELSA GLADIAC GTS looks as good as any other non-3d card I have ever seen (inlcuding S3Virge (the best workbench cards ever created!) and matrox cards), and have heard as much praise for the MX (it's value version). Most other NVidia based cards have quite fuzzy 2d.
