System includes:
Epox MVP3G2 w/ K6-2 550
128Mb RAM
Matrox G200 -AGP
BlackMagic Voodoo 1 -PCI

Best vid card upgrade please?

Voodoo 3 pci or voodoo 4/5 pci, you want to avoid agp problems with that ss7 mobo and the best pci cards are 3dfx cards anyways. You will be cpu limited though.

I had a voodoo3 and it rocked with my SS7 board. No problems, not like the TNT2 line which people seemed to complain about.

And for convenience sake, I do have an extra voodoo3 3000 here I'd sell ya. Box and OEM software included 🙂 (that's Unreal, unreal tournament, and NFS 3)

Actually I bought that exact MB for my brother and he's got a voodoo 3 2000 AGP and it hasn't had any problems. With my Asus p5a the voodoo3 3000 AGP was fine as well.

I'd go with the Geforce 2 MX, it's got very low power usage (vital for socket7) and it can do 32bit. See I'm not 100% anti-nvidia, best not to get a Kyro 2 with Socket7 because it was designed for more powerful cpu's.

A good place to get information on S7 is the Amd Zone, K6-X Series CPUs

I used to have a AMD K6 2 550mhz and it worked great with my old Gf2 mx, much better than my old v3 2000.

A Voodoo3 is great for k6s, but I would avoid Voodoo4s and 5s, as they need good cpu power. I'd imagine that a Geforce 2 card would probably get you the best performance, but may have some issues with your mobo.

Howdy,
Power consumption is perhaps the most significant limitation. Having had a Socket 7 and ran it with a GeForce DDR and had it crash, I can tell you that you need a card that doesn't require a lot of power because Socket 7 motherboards can't provide enough juice to the AGP slot. Make sure you have at least a 250 Watt power supply as well.

I'd recommend a GeForceMX or Voodoo3 card, as they don't require a lot of power. In particular, since GeForceMX's can also do 32 bit color versus the 16 bit color of the Voodoo3, the GeForceMX's sound better. NVidia also provides only marginal technical support for 3dfx products ever since they they acquired 3dfx. Therefore, the GeForce seems the logical choice.

Good luck.

Definitely skip the V3 and go with a GF2 MX AGP.
I upgraded my K6-2+ 450@600 from a V3 3K to a GF2 MX and WOW!!!

Since you are still CPU limited, the MX card runs the same at 800x600x16 as it does at 1024x768x32, so that alone should be a good enough reason, as the V3 couldn't do 32bit if it wanted to. Some games (like Links 2001 and Myst III), now require a 32bit capable 3d card, and it sucks if you want to use one of those games, only to find that the V3 is not compatable with it. Even though performance is CPU limited, I saw a good 20% boost in performance in nearly every game, and if the game supported hardware T&L, the boost was much more. With modern games like Nascar Racing 4, am now able to run with graphics turned up half way at 1024x768x32, instead of nearly all graphics off at 800x600x16. Than of course there is the little thing that 3dfx is gone, and nVidia is not. Last off, if or when you upgrade to a higher end CPU, the MX will give much more performance, and will be fully usable, while the V3 will still be a 16 bit V3.

Of course if I still had the V3 and wanted to find someone to buy it while it still had a slight amount of value left, I would say that IS the card to get. Luckily, I found a ****** buyer a couple months ago, and got $50 for the Full Retail version in original box, with all software, games, and TV out. Took me 3 months find someone that could still use a decent 16bit card, and the Links 2001 32bit incompatabilty actually cost me a sale.

2 cents...

Don't overplay the power supply problem on SS7 boards with the Geforce
I don't beleive that is an issue with the cards we are talking about.
The MX has a relatively low demand and I would be astonished if you encountered problems.

If you can live without 32 bit (I personally can)the V3 is a contender particularly considering the price. Having said that this will probably be the last upgrade to a SS7, at least for the video and in that case the MX give you much more of everything. Dualhead, TV out etc. the new gainward cards are comparable to the GTS up to 1024. The T&L and GPU of the Geforce will give you better performance on a lower end system (*cough* I have SS7).

V3 good price, good compatability, good 16bit performance.
MX superior perfomance on lower and higher end machines, 32 bit, better features and driver support, only drawback is really that it will cost you twice as much.

Oh yeah Radeon LE or Vivo if you want the Vivo features I personally would go with the LE first and hack the hyper-Z then go with the MX then last the old favourite the V3.

edit - somebody posted that the Vivo is $69 at Circuit City, I think CC.

toss up between the voodoo 3 2000, or the Banshee. Depending on what software/games you prefer, there are advantages to either card. I used both of them in a SS7 with a K3 400 and actually had better luck with the Banshee. The Savage S4 was also a good card with the SS7, so look at your software demands.

As was mentioned, really really try and avoid any card that puts a strain on the cpu as most cpu's that run on the SS7's couldn't hold up to the demands.

If you really don't need 32-bit, go with the Voodoo3 3000 or 3500, since they're so cheap now. If you want 32-bit, I think you could save a few dollars and not notice any real difference with the Geforce2 MX-200! (Yes, I said 200!). You're not really going to be playing at any high resolutions, and at low resolutions the card is fine, since its highly dependent on CPU speed as well.

I agree with the other guys. Avoid AGP cards and get a Voodoo3. Honestly, your CPU won't take advantage of anything better.

ATI Rage Fury Pro (VIVO AGP). $60 Works great w/ my MVP3 chipset. The Gforce 2 GTS ran much better, but costs more. $129 (for the 32MB Pro model).
