Best video card to play Doom 3 with?

My fiance's 23rd birthday is coming up, and I'd like to get him something really nice since he's done so much for me. He's in the process of building a computer, and really wants to optimize it for playing Doom 3, etc., and I was wondering what the best video card would be for this?

I've been saving up, and anything up to $600 will be considered (hopefully it's less though, but I don't want to sacrifice quality for small savings).

What's the best video card out worth its price (and where I can find it, I've found a lot of the higher-end video cards are out of stock/unavailable at many websites), and is there anything else I should get him?

Not sure on availability in your area, but Geforce 6800GT seems to be the sweet spot for cost and performance, and even overclockability. Costs 399$ i think.

So, buying a fiance a video card so he can play Doom 3... a game for which the guy is trying to optimize a new build for? Hm?

You realize that the time he spends on the game is time he's not spending with you, right?

Heh... I don't mind if he goes for the card first, this is something he's wanted for awhile. I tend to fall asleep earlier because I work at 9am and he doesn't have office hours until noon, so it'd be nice for him to have something to occupy his time at night after I conk out.

(oh, and any suggestions on where to find it reliably online at a good price?)

That article Kenazo linked to was awesome, and definitely convinced me the 6800GT is the way to go. Thanks for your input, hopefully I can find one before December 8th!
