I'm currently on a 1080p monitor but will be going to 1440p monitor at some point. What would be the best video with my i7-6700k, 4GHz, currently not overclocked.

I figured Radeon 580, not sure about which Nvidia brand at this time. I might be willing to spend up to the $400 range.

I'm also not that much in a hurry, so if either company hadi something in the pipeline, if i be willing to wait too.

That 980 comes from here, so it's easier to trust the seller than an eBay sale.
Also, $140 is about HALF what that card is worth, he could buy it and flip it for $250.
And, he is still on 1080p. Even with 4gb vram he should have no issue running games for a couple years, when the card will be easily worth $100 on ebay .. honestly a great deal.

I use a GTX 1080ti with my 6700k, so you're not really limited to an entry-level card.

However, at 1440p, I would personally grab a GTX 1070ti for around $350ish when they are on sale (or available at places like the EVGA store on Ebay).

If you’re not going to get the 980, a 1070 or 1070Ti are your best bet at under $400. It might be worth waiting for the 2060 to drop as that should trigger price cuts in more of NVidia’s older stock. They’ll probably have something to say about it at CES so at least you’ll know if it’s a long wait.

I'm the one who put up those cards. Although it would be great if you buy one, the prices are only slightly lower than what I was seeing on ebay. They are still good enough for 1080p, and I'm selling them because I got a 4K TV. 1440p may be a bit borderline.

Fwiw, I had a 1440p 60hz 27".

First I had a 970 4GB (3.5GB lol). It handled common AAA games such as BF4, DX Mankind Divided, Witcher 3 etc well at high textures, dialed shadows back to medium, HBAO/AF max, and low AA. Older or less demanding games like Dark Souls 3 all ultra.

Upgraded to 1060 6GB OC (little slower than 980, but very very close). Was able to go all max except medium AA settings.

Upgraded to 1080 8GB Rog Strix (really strong 1080, 10%+ beyond FE) at the same time upgraded to 3440x1440 100Hz Gsync. Provided 60-100fps at all ultra settings but medium AA.

Upgraded to 1080ti 11GB Aorus. Basically a perfect 3440x1440@100 GPU.

TLDR : 980 should be good at 2560x1440 given what I've seen so long as one isn't pursuing literal all max settings. 60+ in almost everything if you don't mind scaling back on the more penalizing variations of AA.Edit : or wanting 100/120/144/165/240hz AAA.

if you really need it then buy a new card with 3 year warranty. stay away from these old used cards, they could've been in heavy mining with 0 warranty.
