My Dad just got a new PC at his office, for some reason the video quality is terrible. Very faint text, almost filmy or smoky, kind of washed-out looking. Based on the Device Manager the card is a Radeon 9000, I'm guessing the non-Pro version (haven't cracked the case yet).

The monitor is only a few months old (Samsung 955DF) and worked fine with his old PC. I've tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot it - uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, checked all cables, fiddled with color/display adjustments on both the monitor and in WinXP - but it hasn't gotten any better.

I'd like to try swapping out the Video Card - just wanted to see what video card is recommended for text/display quality. Since I don't think he'll be playing UT2003 over lunch 3D Quality doesn't matter at all. Just would like decent colors and nice/clear text.

Thanks

A Matrox G450 would be the best affordable choice in your situation. Matrox by far exceeds all other video card manufacturers in 2D image quality.
Here is a link to where you can purchase it. Matrox G450 AGP 32MB DDR
