Well I have been waiting awhile now to get my new system and from the way everything is shaping up it looks like I might go ahead and wait awhile longer. Q1 is always a great time to buy, after christmas, so I might be looking around then. My current rig is

bfg 6800GT
p4 2.8ghz 800fsb
MSI Neo 2 Platinum
2x kingston hyperx 512
2x wd raptor 36g

I upgraded the vid card from a 9800pro a year and a half ago, right now this system has gone pretty far past my 2 year upgrade cycle and is still runnning most of my games fairly well. I am definetly going to upgrade to AMD dual-core but the current video card wars have ended up leaving me confused.

Anyways the 2001FP has a resolution max of 1600x1200 and 60hz refresh. MY MAIN CONCERN IS THE REFRESH RATE ON THIS MONITOR AND AT WHICH POINT I AM JUST OVERKILLING THE REFRESH. I am a bit ignorant when it comes to monitors/refresh rate/vid card so if anyone can explain what the relationship is exactly and how to calculate this kind of thing or a good article that would be appreciated as well.

If I have my way I think I am going to wait for the 7800ultra 512 and run two of them in SLI on whatever nforce4SLIx16 board DFI comes out with. I also want to be able to run full AA and AF in everything and for this reason might go with and ATI solution, the only problem there is that I don't know how long I want to wait for x1800xt gpu water blocks and I am concerned about how the power situation will flush out with two of these monsters sucking the life out of almost any power supply on the market.

Any comments? I set aside funds for 2 years and have about $5000 for my rig this time around, any savings will just get recycled into my 2 year rig fund ( I really want to setup a dual card solution this time, so don't try to talk me out of it! ). I am setting up water cooling this time and have an Koolance INEX-2 and Lian Li PC75b case already purchased, I'll get the water blocks once I have made a final decision on the mb and vid cards.

leave the refresh at 60. The refreseh rate doesnt apply to lcds. And it is locked at 60 if you use the dvi outpout anyway (I think)

I would wait until nvidia releases the refresh of the 7800, the ultra or whatever they are going to call it. Should only be a month or two away.

You know thats what I thought as well, but I have read alot of conflicting information, are people who post about refresh rates crt owners only? And yes I use DVI.

The main concern of an LCD is the pixel "refresh" rate (rise/fall times). CRTs have to redraw the whole screen (the refresh rate) and LCDs just change color where appropriate, which is why you get the motion blur on certain LCDs because of their slow rise/fall times.

If you're looking at the next gen 7800 in SLI, I'd be getting a new monitor anyways. 1920x1200 widescreen sounds nice to me? How about you? ;)

Yeah, I don't know if I am ready to make the widescreen leap just yet. Plus most games top out at 16x12.

So if the only concern with LCD's is the pixel refresh does the actual refresh mean anything at all? Also what should I look for on the monitor specs? And how should I compare that to a video card(s), by its fill rate?
