Best vid card for P3-1ghz & a 400mhz celeron machine

Hey all --

got 2 machines I'm trying to upgrade. Looking for a fps boost in games -- everything else runs fine.

The p3-1ghz machine has a gforce2pro 64mb card ( and runs my fps well ) and my ancient celeron 400mhz machine has a TNT2Ultra card :)

So I threw the gforce2pro card into the celeron 400mhz machine to see what would happen, and it actually helped out a lot in games like Q3UT and others.

So to the experts out there: If I was only going to upgrade the grafx card, whats the best one for each of these machine. Should I put the gofrce2pro into the 400 celeron and get a gforce3 ti 200 for the p3-1ghz. Or go even cheaper and leave the gforce2 in the p3-1ghz and look for a gforce2MX400 for the 400 celeron as a stop gap short-term solution.

I'm thinking the gforce2pro is overkill for the celeron where the bottlneck is probably the cpu, right ? And I'm not sure a gofroce3 would be taken advantage of in a p3-1ghz machine.

any info/links to the info are appreciated.

Trying to do a cheap upgrade and will probably build a new rig in about 6 months to replace the celeron 400.

thanks!

after reading the other thread in the video forum here
I went ahead and did the madonion 3dmark 2001 benchmark.

Got a score of 1102 with the gforce2pro and my ancient celeron 400 mhz machine.

When I did a video comparison, it showed that the ATI RADEON DDR would score equally, and that a gforce2MX 400 would score 91% of my current setup.

So now I'm leaning towards putting back the gforce2pro in my p3-1ghz machine, and either buying the radeon ( $45 ) or the gforce2MX 400 64mb ( $51 ) to replace the TNT2Ultra.

Does this seem lilke a smart move -- any feedback ?

thanks!

It seems like a fine idea, but get the Radeon instead of the MX. The drivers might not be perfect, but it'll outperform the MX and the image quality is better.

ok - thanks for the feedback.

tried to find the exact specs on which radeon -- seems to be quite a few.

Is the VE the same as the 7200 or 7000? The madonion site doesnt seems to specify, just lists "ATI RADEON DDR"

newegg has the : ATI OEM RADEON 7200 64MB 4X/2X AGP for $59 -- is that the same one ?

thanks!

I don't really know...to the best of my knowledge, the VE is a crippled version that lacks T&L. Get the 7500. Also, if you have a Radeon, make sure to pick up Serious Sam. SS looks gorgeous with a Radeon, far better than with any other card (GF3 and Radeon8500 included).
