Decided to utilize an extra 80 gig HDD as an external backup and avoid extra heat/power demands inside the case. Went to newEgg and found a gazillion (almost). Those of you out there that have opted to make your own external drive - what SATA/USB 2.0 unit do you recommend?

Wow! 24 hours and no takers. Is this in the wrong forum? Should it be in cases and cooling or am I the only one that doesn't want to buy a pre-built external HDD?

well not really 24 hours yet ----

Just go to newegg look up enclosures that take SATA drives, and buy something cheap that has a decent user rating (also read the user comments).

These $30 parts change so often that people don't pay attention to them here like they do $150 core 2 motherboards or $600 video cards :)

If you plan to use it extensively or sustained, I'd recommend one with a fan. I've had hard drives lock up (thankfully not die) after sustained constant access (multi-GB transfers) because of overheating.
