That's pretty impressive. My past experience with Xubuntu is completely different.

Is it Debian? Or maybe memory compression? Or aggressive paging in the swapfile?

Anyway, Lubuntu vs Xubuntu is almost 100 Mbytes difference, which is significant.

It's not the difference in bytes that matters in this case , is what it aports to you out of the box and any Ubuntu product is without a dout better than any other distro, my opinion, what is worth!
for exemple i also tried mint 17.rebeca with force PAE on a Pentium M it realy installed and runs good but it did not work ok with a second monitor out, maybe it can be config. but xubuntu did work out of the box.

Going to join the chorus and agree with Mint with Cinnamon. All the positives of Ubuntu without any of the negatives. It's probably the best consumer distro.

I tired OpenSUSE years ago and it wasn't bad. I'm not a huge KDE fan anymore though. That's more a matter of preference than any issues.

Jhu;you're Kidding?

It's doable. Compatibility for x86 hardware has grown immensely now that Intel is pushing Atom based smartphones. Android x86 project has a freely available build. Up to Kit Kat now, but working on Lollipop. There are a few compatibility issues though. I've tried it on my AMD Brazos based HTPC but can't get sound to work over HDMI. That's really the only issue I've had though.

Android is probably a good option for older laptops, or low cost ones like a hacked Chromebook.

I heard there's a trick to get PAE working on non-PAE Pentium Ms, and that they can all use it (including the 400mhz FSB ones) by flipping something in the ROM on the chip (or something). Is this true? I have a M 735 and might try this later.

Well you heard good because my old Sony Vaio 1.5GHZ 1 gb Mem, i just could figuer out the video out problem of the second monitor with Mint 17.1 Rebeca , i reinstalled with Force PAE and it's runnig great now and i will have support till 2019,i had installed in this vaio Xubuntu 12.04 but support will end April this year, and there are no other reliable distros with NON PAE out there, i tried Xubuntu 14.04 before but it did not install at all,
