Best version of Linux for 1st time user and where to buy?

Mandrake and Redhat are both nice to learn on. Just go to a place like Linuxiso.org and download it for free. (though if you are a 56ker you may want to purchase a copy, or have a friend with broadband download and burn it for you)

If you want more support and easy install options for stuff like macromedia flash you can purchase Mandrake starting at 39 dollars upwards to 700+ dollars depending on the options and features you want.

Check out www.mandrakestore.com

You can also download it for free from links at places like linuxiso.org

Hi,

I've just started using Libranet which is based on Debian. Seems very good to me so far and I've been apt-getting like mad since 🙂

You can download the 2.7 Classic version from here

http://www.libranet.com/download.html

And running the upgrade commands will give you the same stuff as the 2.8 paid for version 🙂

Burn a distro of Knoppix 3.3 to a cd boot from the
cd and you will get the taste and feel of Linux. It
works quite well.

On of the advantages to doing this is that you can take it with you to work/school/whatever and just boot from the CD. The OS doesn't get installed on the hard drive so you aren't messing anything up. Play/Use/Learn linux... reboot and you're back into your normal OS.

Of course, if you have a seperate box and want to get something fully installed, that's cool too. Do both and you've got the best of both worlds and can be learning about two different distros at the same time!

The "where can I buy it" is priceless 🙂
I mean, I know you _can_ buy linux, but unless you're a corporate user or a person who would just feel more comfortable with paid-for support, then by all means .. download it!
Or, I can sell you a set of install CDs for Fedora, Debian, Mandrake or whatever.

Knoppix has an installer program in it, so if you decide you don't want to run from the CD any more you can install it and get an easy installation path to Debian sid.

WOW... I didn't realize that. What a sensible thing for them to do!
