I'm thinking about ditching T-Mobile after almost 5 loyal years.

Which Verizon cell phone would you recommend that costs $199 (after rebates) or less and why?

We currently have plain vanilla Nokia 3390's which are great but I want more bells and whistles.

Here are my choices:
  • Audiovox CDM8600 $109.99 before $50.00 rebate
  • Audiovox CDM8300 with Mobile Office Kit $139.98
  • LG VX6000 $149.99 before $50.00 rebate
  • Motorola T730 $159.99 before $30.00 rebate
  • Samsung SCH-a530s $159.99 before $30.00 rebate
  • Samsung A310 with Mobile Office Kit $169.98
  • AirPrime PC 3220 $199.99
  • Audiovox Thera Pocket PC 2002/Phone $199.99
  • Motorola V60p $199.99
  • AirPrime PC 5220 $249.99
  • LG VX6000 with Mobile Office Kit $269.98 before $50.00 rebate

I got the Samsung a530 (champagne, not silver one - they didn't have the S yet) 2 weeks ago from CircuitCity for $129 w/free DVD player. It was between this and the LG VX6000. I chose this one because Samsung came highly recommended from some coworkers and it was smaller. I really wasn't too interested in the built in camera or ability to play better games. Who's going to sit there and play games on their cell phone that much anyway?

Heh 2 years in a row I've given someone a (free) DVD player for Christmas. ;)

I think the phone features are most important to me followed by PIM/PDA functions, games, and camera.

As far as I can remember samsung is digital only and has no analog mode. I would think LG VX4400 is by far the best and reliable phone. I have heard good things about LG VX6000(with camera) as well. I will stay away from Motorola phones as much as possible. If they try to sell you Motorola T730 feel free to slap him in the face for even suggesting that phone.

Also how much more is the Verizon service which allows you to surf the web and take pics?

Taking pictures is free and surfing the web is extra $5.00 a month. There is an free alternatives though. You just point your phone browser to some IP. Only drawback that I know of is that its not encripted like the Verizon paid service.

I don't really need the camera.

Thanks for referring me to that thread.

Tough choice Samsung or LG.

Picked up 2 LG VX6000's at $100 each, 1 yr contract (corporate discount+$50 rebate - can't beat that when it first came out) ;) They love the phones. Not to mention the great reception and clarity. As for me, I'm still stuck with Sprint till the 24th of this month, then I'm switching over. But I may actually hold off for one of those Kyocera slider phones. :)

I had been looking at that Kyocera KX414... I don't really like flips.

I'm not sure when our contract with T-Mobile ends ... I'm going to see what their retention department will offer me if I threaten to jump ship. I think we switched to the Family Time Plan (2 lines) a few months ago so it probably expires around summer 2004 :(

By then hopefully there will be some new cell phones on the market and promo's.

I highly doubt that verizon will come out with those slider phones. Verizon is suck when it comes to introducing new phones.

Rossman, Don't forget Samsung A530 has no Analog mode.

Damnit Verizon needs to get the Treo 600 to market. :D I have it right now for Sprint (but the signal sucks so it's going back).. can't wait to get my hands on it again with VZW.

I recently got a T730. I love it, and it only costed me $30 after rebate. That was partly due to being a customer for 14 years( I decided to go under my parents plan, and pay them). But you can get a better deal. Probably like $120 or so minus the $30 MIR..

I have the VX4400. I just got it, and I'm pretty happy with it. It isn't completely bug free though... Best part is that it is $50 after MIR.

i have heard a lot of good things about the VX6000. my friend has it and is extremly impressed also. right now, i own a vx4400, but i plan to either upgrade to the samsung-610 (due out soon) or perhaps the samsung-670 (coming out later). there is also rumours of verizon testing out the kyocera slider phone, there is a thread about it in these forums, in fact, i remember posting in it a couple of days ago, ill see if i can dig it up. but if you were to get a phone now, at this moment, i would suggest the vx6000. keep in mind though that the vx6000 doesnt have analog, you would have to go to the non-camera vx4400 for both digital and analog capabilites. of course, if you live in a strong signal area, only digital isnt that big of a concern.

Definetly LG VX6000, great phone, just make sure that you don't need analog as its digital only. Run, do not walk away from anything Motorola that Verizon has right now, especially the t720 and t730, which I have right now and honestly feels as cheap and nasty as those $5 toy cell phones.

I love my vx6000, great features, great reception. And, the screen is 270,000 thousand colors, not 65! It looks great!

Bastards!

T-Mobile said I'm no longer under contract (as of 3/26/2003 - I guess switching to the Family Time plan didn't extend me for another year).

They offered me the Nokia 3595 or Samsung R225m for $19.99 with NO contract extension requirement. I might go for the Nokia 3595 after doing some research.

I think I'll hold off on going to Verizon while waiting for some new cell phones to be released (bluetooth would be nice) and of course the best possible deal.

you can keep waiting :), seriously verizon takes the longest time to offer new phones and even if they do offer some kickass phone I can almost gaurantee you that it will be well above $300.
