I would say the Hitachi Travelstar for a purely magnetic HDD but the Seagate hybrids are not much more expensive and are intriguing for laptops which are usually constrained to one drive bay. You get a lot of the performance benefits of SSD with the capacity of rust technology.

+1 for Seagate hybrids. I used one for almost 2 years, then upgraded to SSD. The performance gain was there, but not overwhelming. The Momentus X is very good value at 320 or 500GB.

I've tried both generations of Seagate hybrids. The 1st gen 750GB 7200 RPMs were great. Surprisingly quiet for 7200 RPM and very good performance. Great value.

The second gen 1TB 5400 RPMs I really wanted to like, but it just didn't work out. You can still tell far too many times that you are using an HDD. It still is a good value at $100 though.

However, keep in mind that isn't too far away from the realm of $120 that can get you an excellent SSD @ 240GB.

So if you wanted value, look into the Seagate Backup Plus portable 1TB for $55-60. Rip the lid off and you'll get a 1TB 5400 RPM HDD. Not a hybrid, but it is a value in it's own right. The 2TB is also available for double the cost if you value capacity over performance. Best of luck.
