I just upgraded from a 1920 x 1200 dell 2709w monitor to 2560 x 1440 benq bl3200pt, and I think its time to upgrade the old GTX 570.

Primarily I play Wow, Lol, Sim City, and Call of Duty, and a bunch of older RTS games, I have a i7 3770k, so my cpu will not necessarily be limited.
I also dual boot with Linux, so this is why I am not really considering a R290x at this time...

I intend to move my 570 into my other Hyperspin Arcade/Mame PC because the gtx 260 is quite ancient.

So I want to buy a single card to play games with.

Regardless, basing on value...

My goal was to spend only about $450 on a new video card.
I have found both MSI Gamer & Asus DCUII gtx 780s for $450 & $460.
(each after $20 MIR)

I also found a Asus DCUII TI780 for $595 also after MIR. (Wasn't considering except this is the cheapest ive ever found a ti)

I do realize the 880 is around the corner, but waiting comes at a price.
In 2 months after vacation in Niagara Falls, I may have less money to spend on a video card. The future is unknown, and I may only be able to afford a gtx 870.

any advice on a difficult now or wait decision?

On the other hand, if you spend the money now, you'll have less money to spend on your vacation in Niagra Falls. hehe.
I think one of the 780's will do just fine. I personally have a soft spot for Asus.
And we really don't know how much a 870 is going to cost us yet.

I'd wait since new cards are 1-2 months away and 570 should be fine for wow and lol at 1440p

running a 6 gb gtx 580 here pushing two 24" 1920x1200 screens. it does just fine keeping up with modern stuff.

There was a 1.5 GB and a 3.0 GB gtx 580, not a 6GB.
Are you running 2 gtx 580 in SLI?

I looked through a few of his posts and he says he is running single card so he must be completely confused if he thinks he has a 6gb gtx580.

EDIT: he says 580 3gb in another post but really so many of his posts make no sense as he butchers the names of many cards...

780s are not a good value in my book but particularly so for the older titles you play, IMO. I would look to GK104 class deals. (670/680, 760/770, etc.)

Then again I don't know how much the GK104 cards cost today. lol. I am assuming ~$250.

Don't throw $450 into a new GPU now, next-gen is about to come soon which should 1) obsolete current stuff at similar prices or 2) force current stuff to have a massive price drop to clear stocks.

Currently the 780 is the best value at your res. Not sure why some people want to complicate it. :)

MSI Gaming 780 if you want a quiet 780 card with little overclocking
Gigabyte 780 Ghz Edition with 1.071Ghz clocks if you want a very fast 780 without overclocking
If you want to spend a bit extra, at around $510 with 5% off and rebate, you can actually get the EVGA Classified 780. With voltage control and bios tweaks, this is going to be among the fastest 780s out there and could reach 1.3Ghz clocks.

Since you don't know if you'll have the funds for 870/880 in 1-2 months, I'd pick the EVGA Classified 780 since you get EVGA's customer service, software voltage control, a strong shot to hit 1280-1300mhz Boost and these cards tend to have slightly higher resale value which somewhat offsets the $50 premium over the MSI Gaming for example.

But honestly looking at the list of titles you have, even a GTX760 or 770 is enough for them. There isn't a single GPU limited game in your list that requires the power of a 780. You could just save money and get a GTX760/770 and then upgrade again in 1.5-2 years. RTS games, WOW and LoL are child's play for these GPUs.

You don't need a 500$ GPU. All these guys suggesting 290 or 780...huh. What the...you don't need a 290 or 780 for WoW or LoL. If those games are your target, get whatever option suits you in the 250-300$ range. Or even less actually now that I think of it.

I will say that Blizzard games generally fare better on NV cards, but it's your call. Although WoW depends on CPU power in 25 man raids with a lot of stuff going on, no matter what GPU you have. Both AMD and NV have cards in that range which will kill all of those games you mention. There's no need to break the bank for games that aren't cutting edge, if you're absolutely certain that you'll be playing those games for the next couple of years.

I think whats being suggested for your gaming habits are way overkill (personal opinion) I wouldnt go with anything over a 770 4GB and even that is really pushing it. If you have the cash to spend have at it, but you really could get by on even a $200-250 card just fine

Another reason to pick the EVGA in your situation is if you do have the funds when the 870/880 hit, and it is within 90 days of your purchase, you can use their step-up program.

With 800 series around the corner I can't recommend buying a card right this moment.

Even if you're not interested in the new stuff, there's plenty of reason to believe the other stuff will get price drops.

If you are really wanting value, nVidia is not the brand to be going for.

But if you do want nVidia, wait 2 months for the new cars. You can then either pick up a 780 for quite a bit less, or a new faster card.

he also mentioned COD, and the newest COD at 1440P can be very demanding (with "ultra settings", lowering details or resolution could probably make even his current 570 perform well)

OP, I think it's better to just wait for the 880/870 at this point, and buying anything lower than the 770 (maybe even the 780) makes little sense considering you have a 570.
