Well, lots of the "cheap" cards these days have DVI outputs (not inputs ), but don't expect to do any serious gaming on any of them.

Well, lots of the "cheap" cards these days have DVI outputs (not inputs ), but don't expect to do any serious gaming on any of them.

This is a great deal since people usually sell them used for that price. The next cheapest one on pricewatch is $82.

I've got a geforce4 ti4200 64mb that I bought used a while back for around $70 and it plays most current games great as long as you're willing to lower the resolution (doom3, hl2, etc).

To get a card worth upgrading a geforce4, the next big step up will cost you over $125 (fast geforce 5, medium speed geforce 6, or newest radeon series).

If you don't care about 3d gaming, get a "geforce MX dvi" - just search for that on pricewatch, they should start out at around $30 shipped.

I dunno, in that range id probably get the (edit: the asus one would probably be my first choice) 9550 as its a bit newer and such, but then again i dont know what hes doing with it...If hes just looking at webpages at 1024x768 you almost might as well just go with the MX series card for 30 bucks... :

I got the 9550 for my mom a while back, the card seemed great

But how does the 4200 shown above compare?

well, just taking a quick look, obviously theres the 64 extra mb of memory which would probably help a bit, as well as dx9 and 1.5 openGL support for the 9550 (whereas the 4200 has dx8 and opengl 1.3)...

Overally my guess would be that the 9550 might be a little faster, but I think itll look alot nicer than the 4200 given the newer technology (ti4200 is the low end of the ti series from 2 generations ago now...actually 3 generations once the new cards come out...)

Thats just my thought though, and I'll be honest (no flames please) that I dont have any evidence to prove it.

My roommate does play on a ti4200 though, and it seems to do ok....i know a lot of people wouldnt deem it "acceptable" but it is playable on most of the new stuff. (graphics settings turned all the way down of course).


But like i said, I havent really researched it, so if someone else wants to chime in with benchmarks or anything, please do.

I think the 4200 and 9550 are close, but i'm not sure, is the 9550 faster than the 9500 ? if so then it is the better choice imho.

the 9550 is slower version of the 9600, the 9500 is a slower version of the 9700, i'm assuming your talking about the non-pro variant, the have the same basic features

the 9500 has 4 vertex shaders and 4 pixelpipes, the 9550 has 2 vertex shaders and 4 pixelpipes, the 9500 should be faster

The Geforce 4 is faster, but is older technology, so can't do as much stuff. The one thing I noticed my geforce4 couldn't do was play half life 2 in dx9 mode.

I looked for some benchmarks to try and show a comparison.

This one shows that the radeon 9550 is about as fast as the geforce fx5200: (higher is some benchmarks, lower in others)

This one shows the geforce4 ti4200 is faster than the fx5200(ultra), and the radeon 9500 pro is a good bit faster than all of them ($106 card on pricewatch):

I wouldn't worry about the 64mb ram limitation since even if you had a geforce4ti with 128mb or even 256mb ram, it won't help you much since the card is slow compared to other high-end cards that really neeed 128mb+ ram. Get the 256mb ram card for your next upgrade

And If you'll be playing on an LCD stuck at some resolution like 1280x1024, the geforce4 will be slow in new games at that resolution (the radeon 9550 would be even slower), so you'd either have to deal with the slowness, or decrease the resolution and not use the LCD's native resolution.
