Best vacation spot within 15 hours driving distance of Dallas, TX?

It looks like the cruise that my family and I were hoping to take together over winter break (Dec. 21-January 1) will be too pricey for our budget.

Instead of sailing off somewhere, my family is trying to decide on a nice place to visit within driving distance (max 15 hours each way?). We enjoyed visiting Hilton Head in the past, but that 20-hour drive is a bit much.

We are hoping for a change of scenery from Dallas, and are looking for a nice place for a family to do things together (swim in the pool, sightsee, do bonding-type activities). Due to the fact that all of my siblings are spread out across the country, we only get to spend family time together once or twice a year for a week or two at a time, and we really want to make the most of our vacation this Christmas.

Any suggestions (specific cities/locations) would be greatly appreciated, thank you. :)

EDIT: Thank you for all of the suggestions so far! I have e-mailed the options of South Padre Island and Colorado to my parents so far.

Wait a month or two and head out to Big Bend state park. Gorgeous country, in a month or so the weather will be beautiful.

Actually, wait until the spring and go there when the cacti are blooming.

Wish we could, but our vacations are all coordinated for December 21-January 1. :(

I snowboard/ski as do two of my younger sisters, but my parents are quite fragile these days and can't risk any injuries. It might be nice for them to try and relax in a warm ski lodge while their children are out and about, though. I wonder if it will end up being just as pricey as a cruise, given the time of year?

You could almost make LV, if you speed and drive nonstop. :p

I didn't know you were in Dallas. Come spend the week at my house, and we'll go stay at your place. Washing dishes in someone else's sink is a *great* vacation! :shiftyeyes;

Interesting website - have you had any positive/negative experiences renting from there? Have you been to SPI yourself, and if so did you enjoy the experience?

The drive is a little over 10 hours, which is definitely doable. I wonder if it will be warm during that time of year?

That isn't a very good idea with 5 Asian female drivers. ;)

I think that Vegas is a better place to be with a partner or a group of friends than one's family. None of them really enjoy gambling or glitz, and are much more low-key than Sin City. I'll be going there with my husband again over Thanksgiving, though!

House swap? Heh. :p I actually live in California with my husband, but my parents and two younger sisters still live in Dallas. My other sister is in Houston attending pharmacy school.

I've used them once, once I found which place I wanted I dealt with the owner straight up, and they cut me alittle deal. Not sure if that's standard practice since that was the only time I used them.

How *young* are these sisters? Can we have pics of your mom?

You know, just in case we see her walking around - we could say "Hi."

Wow, it looks breathtaking! How will the weather be in the winter?

Will we be able to appreciate all of the beauty camping outside, or be stuck shivering inside?

My sisters are 23, 20, and 17. Here is my beautiful mother when she was my age. I certainly hope I inherit her genes, as she still gets carded for buying cooking wine on occasion. She is a very kind woman who has sacrificed almost everything for her children, and we want to make sure she is relaxed and stress/worry-free this upcoming vacation.
