Guys, give me your opinion.
I have a bunch of old computer parts and would like to build 2 systems:
1) ESXi with Free-Nas/Plex computer. Ill prob host 2-3 windows VM on it. Those Win VMs are just there for me to poke around with basic office software (word, excel etc). I may use photoshop on one of the VM since itll be on the same vSwitch of the NAS (which hosts my pictures). This computer is on 24/7
2) Something to do occasional video editing on (not my main comp and no games). I may also occasionally use Photoshop on this one also. This computer prob stay off most of the time
Here are my available hardwares:
+ Xeon X3470 (with mother board and 4 gig ECC memory)
+ Xeon E3-1270 v2 (with mother board and 8 gig ECC memory)
+ Xeon X5650 (with 1366 mother board and 24 gig regular memory)
+ Dual 5570 CPUs (with mother board and 24 gig ECC memory)
+ I7-950.
OS will be on SSD (1 1TB and 2 480gigs). Whatever I use the Free-NAS on, itll be on a LSI card running in IT mode (5 4TB RAID6). I basically just port the entire card/HDD over. I also have another RAID5 with 5 2TB drives.
The computers are connected via 10Gb network so its not that critical for me to store the pictures and run Photoshop on the same comp.
Currently, I have my NAS/Plex on bare metal on the X3470 set up. Photoshop on the X5650 and 5-2TB RAID-5 (Quadro 4000). ESXi with 3 Win7 VM on the E3-1270
.
With all three computer running, the UPS reports around 340 watts. I have other stuffs such as Quadro 6000, Radon 5460, Quadro FX1700 which I dont use since theres no point in wasting electricity.
I should be able to consolidate everything I need into 2 systems. Whats your recommendation taking into account electricity usage.
