Best use of HDD for gaming

The search yeilds lot of info on HDDs, Raid Arrays, IDE, SATA etc.

What I really want to know is, for me, mostly gaming, what is the best config of three drives. I have 2 each SATA II 160 gb drives and one each 160 gb IDE drive.

Is it faster to put my OS (Vista 64) on the IDE drive and STRIPE the other?

Or, Mirror all of them.

Or, use the STRIPE as for both OS and games.

Thought are appreciated.🙂

stripe is faster
it is also half as reliable
the risk is up to you.
fastest would be to stripe and use the 3rd drive to backup important personal data using something like syncback.

Thanks! That is what I thought and it is what I'm now using. Its a gaming machine so data loss does not matter.

If strickly for gaming, why not leave the IDE for your OS than run the 2 SATA drives in Raid0 for your gaming, if all that matters is load times.

Why do you care about the speed of your hard drives for gaming?

If you have enough RAM, the only thing that a faster hard drive affects is how fast a new map starts. After the map is loaded into the RAM, the hard drive is out of the picture.

Thanks for the replys. I have 4 gigs and Vista 64. But I still notice some hitching on games like STALKER and Bioshock. Do you think I might elimiate some of that if I reformat and install Vista on the IDE drive? The games on the STRIPE? Would it help to reserve the page file space first on the STRIPE, so that it is outtermost on the platters?

maybe its vista 64 being silly
there shouldn't be stuttering in games with that much ram unless its doing a level load. its why the last priority for an uber gaming pc is raid. games run perfectly fine off regular drives as long as the cpu/ram/gpu are up to it. rest is not very important.

G15 keyboard reports about 27% Idle and never goes above 75-80% while gaming.

The game hitching and loading is not unbearable. I was just wondering if I could further optimize my HDD use.

Windows Vista Experience reports the Primary Hard Disk Data Transfer rate at 5.9

run : msconfig
in startup the only things I have checked is my firewall, antivirus and soundcard driver.
then in services uncheck anything "that" is useless.

then defrag, thats the key
