I'm looking for a good harddrive enclosure using USB2, and not too much bigger than the hd itself. I don't have a specific hd in mind for it yet, I would rather it not have to have a fan, so I could possibly get a 5400RPM drive if that'd be needed. Although I think i'd use a seagate drive, which would be 7200RPM with about 8 watts of heat, but quiet. Anyways any one know what'd be best to use? Oh and I also want something durable and decently priced.

There actually is no best IMO but there are better chipsets and NEC's latest work for me

I really don't think that you'll be able to find an enclosure that is just a bit larger than the hard drive itself, unless you look for one that that will enclose a laptop hard drive. Remember, the desktop hard drive enclosures are also used to enclose CD/DVD drives so they have to be somewhat large.

I bought a USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure from a local computer store, I forget the manufacturer's name (some Chinese manufacturer), but it works well with the Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM that I put inside. The enclosure doesn't have a fan, but the construction looks rather cheap (lots of plastic) and it surprisingly doesn't have a power switch; I believe I paid about $70 - $80 Canadian.

usb 2.0 case

fits the hard drive nice and snug, and it looks nice too. speeds are decent.
