What do you consider "ridiculous" for pricing?

I believe the Creative EMU 0202USB is a good value for simple 2 channel stereo. The EMU 0404USB steps it up and offers digital pass through.

I have experience with the EMU 0202USB and it has worked very well as a headphone amplifier and a low-noise "transport".

Why do you need a sound card? I'm guessing since you're looking at 5 channel/optical you're passing through to a receiver?

If all you need is optical, the EMU 0404USB is probably a bit of overkill (you'll never use those fancy amplifier circuits). The X-Fi would do you fine.

I have that Turtle Bay and it's quite nice. Never did any blind tests, etc. of course.

Doesn't your mobo have optical? They all seem to these days. Won't encode, of course, but then again you could put the cost of an expensive DD Live card to an HDMI AVR and get lossless surround...
