Toshiba Notebook, I think it is a 1700 satellite or something like that.
CPU- celeron 700MHz
RAM- 76MB (wtf? was toshiba thinking) since added 126mb for 192MB total (maxed out mobo)
HDD- 10GB's

mods-
wireless and wired cards
windows xp

what can I do to increase performance on this little machine. Mainly want to make it a little faster. No games played on this machine, so sound and video are not too important.
What should I do (spending under $150). Also, if you are suggesting oc'ing, will that be safe cause of the poor ventilation in this notebook (one exhaust fan that I can see, the rest are just air vents i think)

are you serious about the 192MB being the max amount of memory you can add? that doesn't sound right for a relatively modern notebook (less than 4 years old)

if you can add more memory do that. generally regarded as a safe investment.

yep, I'll double check that though (computer is 2yrs old!)
thanks for the help

edit:
yep, just confirmed at tosh.'s website 192MB max

I have put a 256MB module into a 1700 series. It is not spec'd for it, but it works. I don't think upgrading the CPU in those laptops would be worth it as the thermal system doesn't look like it could handle much more heat. I am not really impressed with that series.

really?
the new memory shows up in the BIOS and in the system information panel in windows?
so you got 256+76MB = 332MB?
What size (type) stick did you put in.

I will say it again, it worked. The stuff we use is some generic PC133 memory that I don't like. For you, I would try to find PC100 memory as I have seen a lot of PC133 memory not work in PC100 laptops. For some reason, this generic stuff usually works in PC100 machines. We get two types, some with 8 chips and some with 10-12 chips I think. I think the 10-12 chip PC133 works in PC100 machines, but I could have it backwards. If you are going to buy PC133, I would buy it locally so that they can install it and make sure it works fine before you pay for it. I don't know where you are getting 76MB from, the computer has 64MB built-in and one memory slot which gives you a maximum of 320MB.
