I have an katmai PIII 500 which is now too slow for my gaming needs and I am looking for the best upgrade route.

My system is a Abit BE6 (Slot 1), 192mb pc100 memory, prophet II MX graphics card + various other bits.

The cost of a PIII 750E processor + Slocket is almost as much as a Duron 750 + a new mobo. Which would be the better option?

Also I have a Global WIN S370 cooler which I cannot identify. Dimentions 66mm x 74mm x 44mm with 8 rows by 14 colums of fins. Does anybody know which one it is and if it could be used on a Socket A processor.

Any advice gratefully received.

Here's what I did with my old BX board and a Katmai 500. I'm not saying this is the best way to go, but it was simple and took me about an hour to set up once I had the hardware in hand.

If you think you'ld like to run a dual Katmai board, just let me know. ;)

What I would do is add in a P3 700 for $141 or a P3 800(100FSB) for $176. The rest of your stuff looks good. Go for an MSI 2.3 slocket, it's the best. If you like to overclock, outsideloop.com sells pretested 700's@933(133FSB) for less than $200.

Just my 2 cents :)

I would go for the PIII 750 ,clock for clock it 'll be a little faster.

Though the Duron might overclock a little higher & not be held back by your RAM's MHz ability (ref FSB overclocking).
Do you know what speed your RAM will handle?

If you want to stay at 100 MHZ FSB, I would recommend a Celeron II 633 @ 950. I just bought 1 from Compuwiz1 about a week ago and it runs great. It ended up costing about $93 with shipping plus you have to spend about $20-30 for a slocket and heatsink. However, I'm not sure if he still has any of these left.

Performance wise, a 633@950 would probably perform about as well as PIII 750(at default speed) but would cost about half as much. The performance differnece is because the Celeron II only has half the amount of cache plus the cache arrangement is different on the Celeron II.

I just got a P3-700e, IWILL SLocket II, and 2 x 128mbs of PC133 cas2 SDRAM from Crucial. I have my comp running at 933 with stock voltage. Absolutely no problems yet. I am using a Cooler Master DP5-6H51. I got the HSF from a local shop for 10 bucks...

I believe PC Nut sells celeron 633-> 950 with slotkets and heatsinks for about 130.
