Hi,

I about to launch myself into Linux (System Administration) and i woul advice on wich book should i get.I want info on those topic: Instalation, configuration, samba, www & mail server, xwindows, commands, ip masquarade, lilo, DNS, PPP, LAN, ISP, Kernel commilation, etc. I plan on using Redhat and/or Mandrake distribution.

Remember i'm a newbie !!!
Thanks

I highly recommend "Running Linux," third edition, by Matt Welsh et al. It's published by O'Reilly. You'll be very glad that you bought this book. The info in it is easily accessible by newbies, and doesn't talk down to you. When you need to go deeper, it's all right there, too.

Check out www.half.com for the best used book quality and price.
I just bought a Win2000 PRo book in excellant condition for 1/3 the price of new.
Also, thanks for the question. I too need this book on Linux. The new Redhat 7.0 is out (see your favorite auction site: for $4.00).

I finally Bought Mastering Red Hat Linux 6 for 20$US or 30$CDN at a book store near my work, I started reading it looks quite well documented.

IMHO...don't buy any linux books. There is more free info available for downloading than you can shake a stick at. All of the Red Hat manuals are downloadable from their site in PDF format. Lots of other free info out there. the only benefit to buying a book is that all the pages are bound (as opposed to reams of 8 1/2 X 11 held together with binder clips, etc), otherwise, it is all out there for the taking.

Gotta give another recommendation for "Running Linux". I bought the 2nd edition about 1 1/2 years ago as my first Linux book with Redhat 5.2 and it was a great help.

I also like the fact that none of the info in this book is distro specific.

"Running Linux".

Online help doesn't help <grin> when your computer is acting up.

any book from o'reilly should be fine, as long as it's for linux, don't go buy the one about tcp/ip or anything, though. like the other posts, running linux is a good one. also, if you're doing sysadmin work and you're hosting a website on it, you might want to check the o'reilly book for apache. it's called apache: the definitive guide. a good place to get the books and other software and whatnot is Cheapbytes. Good Luck
