If it's a really old laptop (like SATA II), it won't matter much as far as performance.

But the ones that stood out to me from those choices:

Adata SP550, OCZ TL100, Sandisk X400.

Of course this review's results will be higher than a small SSD will achieve, but at least you should see what to expect. If your laptop has SATA III, maybe spring a few extra bucks for one on the list that performs better.

Even at SATA II speeds, I remain suspicious and mistrustful of planar TLC. So I'd get one of the MLC options.

Nothing wrong with that. There are many others here who feel the same way.

For me, it comes down to price, performance, and warranty. I own several MLC and TLC drives, and they all have worked perfectly for me over many years.

Looking at Sandisk Z400s, Sandisk SSD Plus (G26 version)(SM2246XT & 2x64GB), or Adata SP920. All 120/128 GB versions and all MLC. The Sandisks are DRAM-less, but according to Anandtech review, the Adata has 256MB cache, unless they have changed the design over the last 2 years. I don't know how I feel about Adata warranty support either.

I can only remember Kingston was the only large manufacturer who negatively changed their drive's hardware after it was reviewed and sold for a while (and without putting anything out about the change). I've never really used Adata, so I can't say anything good or bad about their product (or support).

I see that there is confusion about the Sandisk Plus G26 version about having MLC or TLC. I might have to go with the Adata just to be sure of MLC.

VisionTek GoDrive is MLC, SandForce controller, much like the Kingston V300 is, or used to be, back in the day.

Now that I am on my computer, and not my phone, that Sandisk X400 I recommended earlier is actually the X400s, which stands for sucks. You don't want that drive at all. 182 MBps write speeds.

The best of the bunch is no doubt ADATA SU800, as you can see here it's head to head with MX300:
