best ultra portable

Work is paying me for a new laptop so I can get whatever I want. Since work is paying, cost is not really an issue.

I want to get something small and light (thinking ultra portable) but will also do a little gaming and multimedia. What do you guys recommend?

Sony has an older Centrino notebook, S-series, that used a Radeon 9700 GPU. 13.3", like ~3 lbs, around $1500-$1800 IIRC.

Asus has the W3V, which would be a better choice IMO: 13.3" Sonoma 1.86, 128MB(?) X600 graphics, ~$1800(?)

Or are you looking smaller than 13.3"? If you are, good luck finding discrete graphics

Even if it does have dedicated graphics, anything that could be considered ultraportable doesn't usually have very good dedicated graphics. For example, you can get the Latitude D610 with discrete graphics (it's pretty small, not exactly ultraportable), but it's only got the X300 I think, which doesn't exactly blow away the Sonoma GMA 900. You should be fine doing some light gaming with any Sonoma system if you're not too hardcore.

The Dell X1 would be a good choice if you want something that small. I've been looking at that, but I've decided I'd much rather have a 14" widescreen with a full-sized keyboard.

With any laptop you want to be able to try it out first, but that's even more true with the ultraportables. Make sure you're comfortable with the keyboard/screen size.

I'd get the Asus W3V in your situation if I was really that concerned about gaming. It's a 14" widescreen, though, not a 13.3". It's pretty borderline ... it's 5.5 lbs... not exactly ultra-portable.

ThinkPad X32 -more powerful than X41.... Ultra portables are 12.1", nothing larger by most standards.... 🙂

Halflife 2 scales down pretty well, he might be able to. Halflife 2 will run on a geforce 4 mx, and a GMA900 is faster than a geforce 4 mx......you may have to add a command line shortcut to force dx7 mode though since the gma900 makes the geforce fx's shader performance look good.
