So here is my situation. I currently live in a dorm room with a single Ethernet (gigabit) jack and an 802.1x wireless network. I'd like to have my own wireless subnet for transferring files, using chromecast etc. What is the cheapest router or access point/wired router combo that will fit my needs?

Wired internet speeds here are gigabit grade so I don't want to be hampered by a 10/100 setup.
Wireless speed doesn't need to be ridiculous. Tweakability is a plus.

Ask your network / IS support if they support connecting a router to a dorm Ethernet port. They may only support dumb switches. Just so you know, they can detect routers too.

Routers are known to work though not technically allowed. I work for IT and trust me no one is going around looking for them...

Whatever you do in your private live is your business.

That said, here (in AT forum) we would not help in such cases.
